Why the gap is so large
- Indeed reflects what is written in job ads. Many ads come from local companies, staffing firms and junior or mid-level roles. Senior roles at well-funded companies often don’t publish a salary at all.
- Levels.fyi is self-reported and skews toward large tech employers, banks and US-headquartered companies. Its numbers are total compensation, so stock grants and bonuses push them up.
- Monthly vs. annual. Mexican salaries are quoted monthly and gross (“bruto”) by default. US benchmarks are annual. Convert carefully, and remember the statutory year-end bonus (aguinaldo) is on top.
What a US company should actually budget
If you are hiring a senior engineer who will work in English with a US team, you are competing in the Levels.fyi market, not the job-board market. A useful way to think about it:
- Decide the engagement model first. Employee through your own Mexican entity, employee through an Employer of Record (EOR), or independent contractor. Each has a different cost structure. See how to hire employees in Mexico and hiring an independent contractor in Mexico.
- For employees, add statutory costs. Mexico’s Federal Labor Law (LFT) requires at least 15 days of salary as aguinaldo, 12 vacation days in the first year with a 25% vacation premium, and profit sharing (PTU). Employers also pay IMSS social security, INFONAVIT housing contributions and a state payroll tax. Mexico City’s state payroll tax rate differs from other states, so ask your payroll provider for the current figure.
- For contractors, think in hourly rates. Lemon.io’s Mexico rate data (Q3 2026, 461 active contracts) shows a median of about US$40/hour for senior developers (5–8 years) and US$47/hour for 8+ years. More detail in our developer hourly rate guide.
- Compare against your local alternative. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of US$135,980 for software developers (May 2025). That is the cost you are offsetting, before US benefits.
Software engineer Mexico City salary by seniority
Neither Indeed nor the Levels.fyi city page publishes a clean per-level split for Mexico City as of November 2026, so treat any blog table that shows exact per-level CDMX salaries with suspicion. What you can do:
- Use the 25th percentile of Levels.fyi as a reasonable floor for a solid mid-level engineer at a company that hires for English-speaking, US-facing work.
- Use the 75th to 90th percentile for senior or staff engineers who own architecture, on-call, and production systems.
- Use Indeed’s range to understand local market pay for junior roles or for companies that serve only the Mexican market.
Language, time-zone overlap and production experience move pay more than the city does. A senior engineer in Monterrey or Guadalajara working for a US team will usually be priced like one in Mexico City. Compare with the Monterrey salary data and the national overview.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Quoting net instead of gross. Mexican candidates often think in net monthly take-home pay (“neto”). Clarify gross vs. net in writing.
- Forgetting the aguinaldo. It is mandatory for employees, paid before December 20 under the LFT.
- Treating a full-time contractor like an employee. If you set the hours, supervise daily and pay a fixed monthly amount indefinitely, Mexican labor authorities may view the relationship as employment. Get local legal advice.
- Anchoring on one source. A job-board average is not a market rate for senior, English-fluent engineers.
- Ignoring exchange-rate swings. If you pay in pesos and budget in dollars, MXN/USD movements change your real cost. Check the Banco de México FIX rate when you set compensation.
When to get help
If you need senior engineering capacity rather than a whole team, a direct contract can be simpler than an agency. Black Engine Technologies is a software engineering studio in Monterrey (UTC-6) with 12+ years across fintech payments (STP/SPEI), Kubernetes and full-stack work, and we take remote contract work with US teams.
